Meet “Scrappy”. Scrappy is a robot arm we’ll be using to learn about robotics this year in a few of our shop classes. If it looks like Scrappy could use some work, you’d be right. In fact, the longer you look the worse it gets, but don’t overlook him just yet.
I built scrappy to work as a trainer for our tech students studying mechatronics, automation and electronics. He’s made from 90% salvaged junkyard parts. His actuators are from old couch recliners, and the steel is from a hitch carrier, engine stand and some random garage door parts.
So why make a robot from scraps? The linear actuators I chose because they’re simple and don’t require motor controllers or voltage regulation. You can run them off a car battery or any power source from 6-30 volts DC. A few of the switches are knife switches (think Frankenstein), chosen for their visibility so you can see how they function.
Technology can be intimidating but it is all built on a basic set of fundamentals. We’ve gotten pretty comfortable with our phenomenal micro processing power, so comfortable we tend to forget how it works. Scrappy is an example of how simple a machine can be, and he kicks the wheels of creativity into gear. My hope is that our students will be intrigued by Scrappy, learn from him, and come up with ways to improve on the design.
In BEST Robotics club we’ll be building robots similar to Scrappy, and have the opportunity to compete on a playing field against other schools. For more information on BEST Robotics or to sign up, email me (john.russell@cvsstorm.com), or visit https://www.bestrobotics.org/site/b_about_best.php
